Frequently asked questions

We believe that understanding the process is key to a successful therapeutic journey. Below, you'll find answers to common inquiries about counselling, our specialized services for all ages, including children and women, and practical details about Guiding Light Counselling Services, designed to help you navigate your options with ease and clarity.

What should I expect when starting counselling for the first time?

Many new clients wonder about the practicalities and effectiveness of counselling. Common questions include: What are the session prices? How does insurance reimbursement work? What types of counselling are offered (e.g., for anxiety, depression, stress management)? How long is a typical session? What are the counsellor's qualifications and specialty areas? Can I choose between online and in-person sessions in Airdrie, Alberta? What is the cancellation policy? And most importantly, how is confidentiality maintained? We address all these concerns to ensure you feel secure and informed before starting your journey with a certified Canadian counsellor.

What does it mean to be a Registered Canadian Certified Counsellor or Psychologist?

Being a registered Canadian Certified Counsellor or Psychopathologist means your therapist has completed extensive education, supervised clinical training, and meets ongoing professional and ethical standards required by their regulatory body. Registration ensures that your counsellor practices ethically, remains accountable to a governing organization, and engages in ongoing professional development to provide safe, effective, and evidence-based care.

How is my confidentiality protected?

Confidentiality is one of the most important foundations of the therapeutic relationship. Therapy often involves sharing highly personal and sensitive information, and your privacy is respected at all times.

What you discuss in session will not be shared with anyone without your consent. At the start of therapy, your therapist will provide a written confidentiality and informed consent agreement outlining how your information is protected, as well as the legal limits to confidentiality (such as risk of harm to yourself or others).

If you would like your therapist to communicate with another member of your healthcare team (such as a physician, naturopath, or lawyer), written permission is required. Your therapist will provide the necessary consent form before any information is shared.

What are the benefits of counselling?

Counselling can be a powerful and supportive process. While benefits vary from person to person, many clients experience:

  • Increased emotional well-being and sustained happiness

  • Greater self-awareness and personal insight

  • Improved self-esteem and confidence

  • Stronger communication and relationship skills

  • Effective tools for managing stress, anxiety, and depression

  • Emotional relief through sharing experiences and feelings

  • Practical strategies for problem-solving and goal setting

Counselling supports both healing and personal growth.

If I’m taking antidepressants or other psychiatric medications, can I still benefit from counselling?

Yes—absolutely. Research consistently shows that combining medication with counselling is often more effective in treating depression and anxiety than either approach alone. Counselling and medication can work together to address symptoms while also building insight, coping skills, and long-term resilience.

In some cases, symptoms may be effectively managed through counselling alone, offering benefits such as increased self-efficacy and personal strength without medication side effects.

Is therapy covered by health benefits?

Psychological services are not currently covered under universal healthcare; however, many extended health benefit plans cover part or all of the cost of therapy sessions. Coverage varies depending on your provider and plan.

We recommend contacting your benefits provider before starting therapy. Helpful questions to ask include:

  • What mental health services are covered under my plan?

  • How much is covered per session?

  • How many sessions are included annually?

  • Are my counsellor’s credentials recognized?

  • Is a referral from a primary care physician required?

Are services available virtually?

Yes. All services are available virtually or by phone, offering flexibility and accessibility.  We currently DO NOT offer in-person sessions, but we are working on offering that service soon!

Do you offer direct billing with insurance providers?

Direct billing is available for many major insurance providers, including (but not limited to):

  • Alberta Blue Cross

  • Manulife

  • Canada Life

  • Green Shield

  • Sun Life

Please check with your provider to confirm coverage details and whether a referral is required. If direct billing is not available under your plan, a receipt will be provided for reimbursement.

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that life happens. If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, we kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice, or missed appointments, may be subject to a cancellation fee. This policy allows us to respect the therapist’s time and offer availability to other clients in need of support.
